Invention for Good

AI Summary:

The Flux Online STEAM Challenges – Season 2 invites participants to engage in creative problem-solving by inventing a tool, device, or machine that enhances another person’s life. This initiative emphasizes the importance of empathy—the process of understanding the needs and challenges of others—as the foundation of effective invention. Each week, a new challenge is introduced, encouraging students to apply the Design Thinking process: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Participants are required to submit a 1–1.5 minute video detailing their invention, its purpose, intended user, and potential improvements. The program fosters innovation and practical application of STEM skills through hands-on learning, with supporting resources available for educators via a partnership with Sharpen.Design.

Consider This

For this challenge, you will invent something that will make someone else’s life better. It could be a tool, device, machine, etc. that helps someone somewhere with something! A good inventor understands who their invention is for and what challenge or problem it solves. Understanding who you are helping with your invention is called Empathy. Empathy is the first step in the creative problem solving process, and is key to creating a successful product.

Challenge 1: Invent to Help Someone

Your mission:
Create something that improves someone else’s life.

Think simple! The best inventions often solve everyday problems in clever, unexpected ways.

Use Design Thinking

Stuck on where to start? Try the Design Thinking process to guide your project:

  1. Empathize – Understand your user’s needs. What challenges do they face?
  2. Define – Clearly identify the problem your invention will solve.
  3. Ideate – Brainstorm creative solutions.
  4. Prototype – Build a simple model of your idea (it doesn’t need to be perfect!).
  5. Test – Get feedback and see how well your invention works.
