How to use the Trace Function with Beam Studio

AI Summary:

The tutorial outlines a systematic procedure for utilizing the Trace function in Beam Studio to convert raster images into vector formats suitable for laser engraving and cutting. Initially, an image is imported and then converted from a gradient to a monochrome bitmap by adjusting threshold settings. Subsequently, the Trace function transforms the bitmap into a vector, enabling advanced manipulations such as filling, decomposing shapes, and adding offsets. The process includes defining an outline via offset parameters and organizing elements into layers to manage cutting and engraving tasks effectively. This method enhances precision and customization in laser processing workflows.

How to Use the Trace Function in Beam Studio

1. Import the Image

For this tutorial, we’ll use the Fluxspace logo. I copied it from Google Images and pasted it into Beam Studio using Ctrl + V.
If we sent this to the laser now, it would raster engrave (the laser moves left and right, layer by layer).

2. Convert Image to Bitmap

The image is imported as a gradient, which won’t work for vector engraving.
We need to turn it into a monochrome bitmap.

  • Uncheck the “Gradient” box.
  • Use the “Threshold Brightness” slider to adjust what parts of the image show up.
Note: Some small parts may disappear if the threshold is too low.

3. Trace the Bitmap

Now we use the “Trace” function to convert the bitmap into a vector.
The image will look the same, but Beam Studio will now treat it as a vector.
This lets us:

  • Toggle fill (infill)
  • Decompose the shape
  • Add an offset
    (And more advanced options)

4. Add an Outline (Offset)

To cut around the logo, add an offset to the vector.
Click the offset button to open settings for:

  • Distance
  • Direction
  • Corner style
Adjust these however you like. This creates your final shape.

5. Change the Outline Layer

To organize layers:

  • Click the layer box in the top left
  • Choose “Move elements to” another layer
Note: You need at least two layers to move objects.

6. Set Cut or Engrave Options

On the right side of the screen, you can choose whether each layer cuts or engraves.
Click the box and use the dropdown menu to set the desired action.
